Echoing similar requests I've noticed on this board, I'd appreciate an easy way to move tabs from one window to another, preferably many tabs at once.
Like some other users, apparently, I like to use a handful of window, each with related tabs. I prefer this over tab groups within a single window partly because my screen is small and many tabs in one window makes it hard to distinguish them (please don't bring up multiple rows of tabs, my screen is even shorter than it is wide & i don't want to waste any vertical space. and also, yuck!). Plus, with multiple windows, some can selectively be minimized to manage one's focus & attention.
I often find myself having opened dozens of new tabs and then wanting to move them all to a new window. Doing this now with FF is not always a great experience, as one needs to move the first tab off to a new window, and then drag each other tab into that same window. In addition to the tedious repetition, it's not always easy to position the windows well so that the right part of each is visible and also, on slow machines, the latency of the drag UI makes it easy to miss and have the tab go to a new window instead.
TMP doesn't seem to be able to help much today, even though it seemingly easily could. For example, there are some commands that apply to a tab and all others to the left or right, but it seems that Move to New Window is not one of those. And there's a mechanism to mark tabs as selected and I would expect, when there is a selection, for TMP to change actions that normally act on the one tab, like Close, Reload, Duplicate, or, Move to New Window, to act on all the selected tabs. But no, this doesn't seems to be the point of selecting tabs (I can't seem to tell what the point is). Perhaps the selected tab set could also be moved en masse whenever one of them is dragged to a new window. With all my complains about dragging tabs between windows above, if I can do it carefully once instead of over again for each tab then that would be a huge benefit.
But related to that, I'd like to call for a further variation/generalization on the Move to New Window option, one that moves to the existing window behind, or perhaps to any
existing window (selectable from a submenu or something). This would be just another way of achieving what tab dragging does, but convenient when one finds it to too burdensome to position the windows correctly. Others have called for this feature before
, but the board admins didn't seem to understand the need for this feature, perhaps partly as it got sidetracked into a discussion about virtual screen workspaces or something. It's been mentioned
that there's another FF extension, Multiple Tab Handler, includes the feature of selecting tabs and moving them together by dragging and that it's (at least partly) compatible with TMP. However, with all the features duplicated in both extensions, I'm reluctant to have both installed even if just for the conceptual conflict. If I find myself hela-frustrated again in the future trying to move many tabs between windows, frankly I think I'd end up removing TMP to install ony MTH.
